21st February 2024 (6.45 to 8.15 pm) – Online Meeting – Clinical Pathology in Deer The BDVA are holding an online (Zoom) evening CPD event to discuss topics related to clinical pathology in all types of deer. The meeting is aimed at veterinary surgeons in general practice who want to know more about clinical pathology. We are grateful to James Barnett (Farm Animal Veterinary Advisor for Axiom Laboratories) who will introduce the topic with a presentation on testing deer for a variety of conditions. BDVA Online Meeting – Tuberculosis in Deer Update – (6.45 pm) 27th September 2023

The BDVA committee aim to update members regarding progress on bovine tuberculosis (bTB) and enclosed deer (farms and parks in particular). This will include progress on surveillance testing in the field, updates on discussions with APHA and a discussion with any scenarios members would like to raise. The British Veterinary Zoological Society conference 2023 is being held from 3th – 5th November 2023 at Aston Hotel in Birmingham. The conference spans 3 days and a full agenda will be pulblished soon, and there will be a stream focussing on wildlife and deer. This article is written by Aiden Foster (University of Bristol) and Alan Wight (APHA) and is a review of reindeer submissions to APHA between 2011 and 2021, including discussions on common presenting signs and discussing common conditions. Published Book: The Management of Enclosed and Domesticated Deer, John Fletcher

A new book, “The Management of Enclosed and Domesticated Deer”, Edited by John Fletcher, has been published that may be of interest to veterinarians and members of the UK deer industry. The book has been published by Springerlink and can be found here. A book review has been written by BDVA president Aiden Foster and published in the Vet Record, but is also available to BDVA members through the ‘Members Area’ ‘Book Reviews’ section.

BDVA “EAT NOT” tags for order

The BDVA has ordered a series of “EAT NOT” ketchum tags designed to be used in situations where deer are administered medications that are not permitted for use in food producing animals, such as darting. These ketchum tags can be ordered from the BDVA by emailing us at: [email protected]. The tags can be purchased from us for £15.00 for 10x tags. The tags are ketchum “Tamp No 1” tags and adapters for the pliers can also be purchased for £5.00. Postage for any orders will be £2.95.

New deer movement system: Livestock Information Service

The Livestock Information Service (LIS) is the new method for recording the domestic movement of deer in England. This has now replaced the old ARAMS system that was in effect. It is a requirement to register all domestic deer movements through the LIS, either by registering for an online account and recording it electronically, or submitting a paper form, similar to the previous ARAMS form. More information about the reporting of movements can be found on the LIS website or on the gov.uk website.

Reprint: Gardens of Earthly Delight, John Fletcher

John Fletcher has been one of the most influential figures in the modern UK’s deer industry and has been a key figure in the formation of the British Deer Veterinary Association (née Veterinary Deer Society). John’s 2011 book, Gardens of Earthly Delight, is a text that details huge amounts of history and information surrounding the place of deer in the history of mankind and in Britain. For those interested, this book has been re-issued for a second printing and can be purchased from Oxbow Books here.
