Death announced of the highly respected veterinary virologist Hugh W. Reid

The eminent veterinary virologist and scientist Hugh Reid passed away on May 10th 2024. His funeral was held in Edinburgh on May 24th. Hugh had a long association with the Moredun Research Institute and he published a substantial body of work on diseases of livestock including deer. He was a key contributor to the Veterinary Deer Society book (1994) Management  and Diseases of Deer (A Handbook for the Veterinary Surgeon). He was the editor of The Management and Health of Farmed Deer (A Seminar in the CEC Programme of Coordination of Research in Animal Husbandry), held in Edinburgh on 10-11 December 1987; published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. Hugh made substantial contributions to our understanding of Louping Ill Virus and herpes viruses associated with Malignant Catarrhal Fever, amongst other infectious agents, including notably BSE.

His colleagues reported that “The funeral was a great celebration of his very colourful and productive life with many stories of his exploits exchanged at the reception afterwards.” An obituary will appear in the Veterinary Record in due course.
